"The desert is an alluring place. Tranquillity, clear skies, bright stars, simmering vistas, intense colours, big dunes and magical experiences..."
Outward trip (via Foum Zguid)
7:00am - Depart Marrakech
9:00am - Arrive Taddert. Stop for refreshments.
10:00am - Go over Tiz n Tichka pass.
Stopping for photos on top and en route.
A sedate drive through the palmeraie via Tazenakht and stop for lunch at Foum Zguid, at about 1:15pm. This is the end of the tar road. There is little traffic on the route to Foum Zguid and the scenery is dramtic - sometimes barren, sometimes verdantly green.
2:30pm - Depart Foum Zguid
5:15pm - Arrive at Erg Chigaga Camp
Its a long drive from Foum Zguid to the camp through the desert. The trip is varied though, initially through hamada (rocks), then the dried out Lac Iriki and lastly through soft sand and dunes.
Return trip (via Draa Valley and Ouarzazate)
9:00am - Depart camp after breakfast. 9am.
10:15am - Arrive M'hamid
12:00pm - Arrive Zagora and stop for lunch.
En route one can stop at Tamegroute to visit the pottery kilns, and ancient underground living quarters.
1:00 pm - Depart Zagora via Draa Valley. Arrive Ouarazate at 3:30pm.
TheDraa Valley is very picturesque, and there are many kasbahs to visit and photo opportunities.
3.30pm - Depart Ouarzazate, arriving back in Marrakech at 7:00pm.
Upon arrival at the Camp one is greeted, offered a drink, and shown your tent and the camp.
Guests are taken into the dunes for sundowners.
Dinner is served under the stars. After, around the camp fire, there is impromptu Berber music. Sit around, enjoy the atmosphere and the stars.
Next day after breakfast a typical day might involve going on a trek with camels. Picnic lunch and return to camp at about 4pm. Walk up the highest dunes for evening drinks, or just be by oneself.
The 2nd full day can be spent doing more of the same, trekking in different directions, visiting the oasis, sand boarding, cooking, making bread, visiting nomads (if one can find them), quads. There is plenty to do.
Go action crazy, or alternatively, relax, eat, drink and stargaze...
The desert is a place of peace and quiet, with clear starry skies and big vast landscapes. Just relaxing, eating and drinking, reading a book, enjoying the hospitality, and taking the occasional walk in a pristine and totally different environment is for many activity enough.
However, for the restless, there is plenty to do.
